Unite Welcomes Lord Myners Report
Unite the union has welcomed a report by Lord Myners to change the governance of the Co-operative Group, saying that it was currently the 'only game in town' that could deliver a future for the group and the workforce.
Earlier last month the union wrote to Co-op’s regional board members on behalf of its 1,200 members urging them to back reform warning that the status quo was unsustainable.
Commenting on the publication of the full report, Unite national officer, Adrian Jones said: "We broadly support the report. It is the only game in town at the moment that can deliver a future for the group and our members. The current situation is unsustainable and recent events should leave people in no doubt of the need for reform to secure jobs and the Co-op Group's future.
"Our members embrace the Co-op's unique ethos and have been working tirelessly to make the group a success, but they are increasingly feeling frustrated that their livelihoods are being overlooked in the internal power struggles over whether to reform the group.
"We'd urge Co-op members at the AGM on Saturday to give the group a fighting chance and support reform."

George Awarded Damages Over 'Obsession'
The man cleared of murdering TV presenter Jill Dando after spending seven years in jail has won damages over newspaper claims. Barry George brought the case over claims that he was obsessed with singer Cheryl Cole and newsreader Kay Burley. The claims were made in the Sunday Mirror, the People and on the Daily Mirror website in 2008.

West Lothian Cannabis 'Farm' Raided
Lothian and Borders Police have launched an investigating after a cannabis cultivation was discovered at a property in West Lothian. Officers carried out a search at an address in Ossian Drive, Livingston yesterday and discovered five separate growing areas within. Approximately 200 plants were recovered with and estimated value of £30,000.

Anarchist Group Claim Responsibility For Police Centre Fire
Police are investigation claims made online by an anarchist group saying that they were responsible for a fire at a new police firearms training centre in Somerset. A group calling itself Angry Foxes Cell posted on the Bristol Indymedia website that its members had targeted the under construction site at the Black Rock centre in Portishead.

Meat Supplier Dropped By Tesco
Tesco has dropped meat supplier Silvercrest following the discovery of horse DNA in burgers, stating the, "breach of trust [was] simply too great". The supermarket has said the meat in the offending burgers did not come from a list of "approved suppliers".

Ex-England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is among four people who have begun legal action against Mirror Group Newspapers over alleged phone hacking. The claims against the publisher of the Daily and Sunday Mirror and the People were filed at the High Court on Monday.
