Sue Townsend Dies, Aged 68

Sue Townsend, best known for her series of Adrian Mole novels, has died at the age of 68.

The writer passed away at her home on Thursday following a short illness, it is understood.

Townsend had suffered from health problems over the years. In the 1980s, the was diagnosed with diabetes. The condition left her blind.

In 2009, she also underwent a kidney transplant and in 2012, it was reported that the novelist had suffered a stroke.

Paying tribute, Tom Weldon, chief executive of her publishers company, Penguin Random House UK, said: "Sue Townsend will be remembered as one in a handful of this country's great comic writers. We were so proud to be her publishers. She was loved by generations of readers."

Townsend is survived by her husband and four children.
