London Third Favourite World Destination

London goes up in the favourite world cities for travellers and reaches the third position in the global TripAdvisor ranking, which is based on millions of traveller reviews and ratings.

Paris, New York or Prague are among the capitals pipped to the post by the UK's capital with only Istambul, in the first position and Rome, in second, edging ahead.

The British capital is followed by Beijing, Prague and Marrakesh.

Paris and New York, which were the top destinations in 2013 fell to 7th and 12th places respectively, disappearing from the top 10.

Of UK destinations the capital reaches the first position followed by Edinburgh and the traditional seaside resort of Torquay in Devon.

Liverpool, Belfast and York also made the top, 10 which ended with York, Leeds and Birmingham in the last position while Manchester, Glasgow and Blackpool dropped out the main positions.

James Kay, a TripAdvisor spokesman recognized that the birth of the royal baby “keep the eyes of the world on London in 2013, but the capital's continued appeal among travellers around the world surpasses any one event."

BBC World Service Cuts International Output
BBC World Service has released details of its response to a cut to its Grant-in-Aid funding from the UK's Foreign & Commonwealth Office - with fewer language services as a result. BBC World Service is to carry out a fundamental restructure in order to meet the 16% savings target required by the Government's Spending Review of 20 October last year.

England has lost out on the chance to host the 2018 World Cup after Fifa, football's governing body, selected Russia to stage the event for the first time. Russia fought off rival bids from Spain-Portugal, Netherlands-Belgium and England to clinch the secret ballot made up of Fifa's 22 executive members in Zurich.
