Royal Mail Lorry Smashes Into House

A 7.5 tonne Royal Mail Lorry has crashed into a house in Wheatsheaf Mews, off Brockhurst Road in Gosport.

The incident happened just after 6am on Wednesday morning, when the lorry crashed in the home of a couple in their 60s.

Firefighters had to remove a window from the second floor to rescue the pair, who were treated at the scene for shock by the ambulance crews.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Resident Anne Wiles said: "We were really, really shook up. My husband broke down because he was going to get up 10 minutes before it happened" and she added that he "jumped out of bed, went on to the landing and there was a big gaping hole and the front of a lorry."

The house had just been sold by the couple subject to contract.

Hampishire Fore and Rescue Paul Coates said that the next-door building has been evacuated because it is unsafe: "A family of four in the other building can't get out because the car outside their house hit by the lorry and has been rammed it into the front door and hit a gas main which has had to be isolated."

The A32 Brockhurst Road has been closed in both directions between Eastbourne Avenue and Elson Road.
