Train Announcer Warns Of 'Gypsies And Thieves'
An investigation has been launched after a train announcer warned passengers about "gypsies and thieves" last Saturday at Telford Central station in Shropshire.
The PA system of the 17:25 GMT Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury service issued the announcement, which was received with loud cheers and laughter from some passengers, as seen via a mobile phone video.
The announcement: "Telford Central. Please be aware of pickpockets and Gypsies," was heard as the train pulled up the station.
London Midland said it was looking into the incident, but said it had not received any complaints. It said an inquiry was under way.
"We are deeply sorry to anyone who was offended by the announcement," a spokeswoman said.
"We do not tolerate comments of this nature being made by anyone on a London Midland train, and a full internal investigation is being carried out."
