UK Condemns Russian “Land Grab” of Crimea

The foreign secretary has condemned the Crimea "land grab" as illegal and said the UK was suspending all arms export licences and military co-operation with Moscow.

Similar actions is also being considered by the EU, he said.

According to reports Vladimir Putin has claimed that Crimea "has always been an integral part of Russia", with Moscow saying that it is protecting the Russian-speaking people rights. It follows last Sundays referendum, which recorded a 96% support from the region to join Russia.

Mr. Hague said Russia was trying to "muddy the waters of the international opinion" with a "profound breach" of the international law.

In response to Russian actions the foreign secretary said all bilateral military co-operation between UK and Russia not subject to treaty obligations had been suspended and defence export licenses to Russia, worth about £37m, had also put in hold.

Mr Hague also said that Russia's relationship with Europe could be "permanently affected", adding that it was likely that the G8 group would now meet without Russia if the country does not change it direction.
