Body Found In River Identified As Megan Roberts
A woman's body found in the River Ouse, near York, has been confirmed as that of missing student Megan Roberts.
North Yorkshire Police said a member of the public spotted the body at 3.30pm on Sunday, at Acaster Malbis, a village around five miles south of York. The location is downstream from where Megan Roberts, 20, went missing almost six weeks ago.
Roberts, who was a student at York St John University, disappeared during a night out with friends in the city on 23 January. She was last seen on CCTV on the corner of Rougier Street and Lendal Bridge at around 2.20am before she went missing. It was later feared she had fallen into the River Ouse, near the Lendal Bridge.
Police have previously said that the most likely explanation for the woman's disappearance was that she got separated from her friends while under the influence of alcohol and fell into the river.
Jackie Roberts, the mother of Miss Roberts, said: "We would like to thank the police, fire service, and the public that have been involved in the search for Megan. We would also like to thank everyone who has offered support and comfort during this painful time.
"Megan was an intelligent, talented and beautiful person whose kindness and sense of humour will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her."
Megan's father, Jason, added: "Megan was a wonderful, kind and loving daughter who will be missed by many."
