Huge cocaine haul uncovered in Gibraltar

UK Customs and Gibraltar Customs officers have revealed that they scored a major success when they seized over half a tonne of cocaine at the Port of Gibraltar earlier this week.

The 50 ft British registered sailing vessel named 'Perkeo' docked at Gibraltar in the early hours of Wednesday morning and, acting on intelligence, a search was carried out. Gibraltar Customs carried out the search with the help of drug detection dogs and a hull search with divers.

More than 550 kilos of cocaine, estimated to have a UK street value of around £30 million, was found in purpose-built concealments that could only be accessed by physically breaking into them and was specially packed to ensure the scent of the drugs could not be liberated. Two arrests were made at the scene.

During the course of the day the British woman was also arrested at the airport, following her arrival in Gibraltar from the UK. She is assisting Customs in their enquiries.

Chief Investigation Officer for Customs and Excise, Paul Evans said: "Law Enforcement partnering across international borders is crucial in fighting modern crime. Drug traffickers are international criminals and our law enforcement practices have to reflect this.

"An enormous amount of cocaine could have been heading for the UK and I congratulate Customs here and in Gibraltar for working together to stop it causing misery on our streets."
