Barclays To Close Branches And Loss Staff In Cost-Saving Measures

Some 400 branches of Barclays bank are to be closed with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

The bank has announced plans to restructure part of the business, within which it is expected to replace hundreds of branches with smaller outlets in Asda supermarkets.

The news of further job cuts follow 3,700 layoffs in 2013.

Chief Executive Antony Jenkins is expected to publish a new five-year financial target next month.

It is understood that Mr Jenkins plans to cut £1.7bn from the banks annual expenses.

UK Banks To Face Major Shake-Up
A government-backed commission has suggested that UK banks should ring-fence their retail banking divisions in order to protect them from riskier investment banking arms. The Independent Commission on Banking, led by Sir John Vickers, said it would "make it easier and less costly to resolve banks that get into trouble.

Co-op Buys Lloyds Bank Branches
Terms have been agreed for the Co-op to buy 632 branches of Lloyds TSB and Cheltenham and Gloucester. The Co-operative Group will pay Lloyds Banking Group £350m upfront and up to an additional £400m based on the performance of the combined business. European regulators demanded the sale after Lloyds bought HBOS during the financial crisis.

Barclays to cut 1,200 jobs
Barclays has announced plans to cut 1,203 jobs as part of a two-year plan to change its UK retail business. The job cuts will come from the closure of two call centres in Bexleyheath, Kent and Clacton, Essex, along with a processing centre in Dudley.

RBS To Close 44 Branches
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has said it is to close a total of 44 branches across the UK. It is understood the move is due to a 30% fall in branch transactions over the last four years. Of the branches that are being closed, RBS has classed 14 of them as the "last banks in town".
