Main Irish post offices closed by CWU strike action

Around 20 post offices in southern Ireland were shut today as workers engaged in what An Post described as an “unofficial” strike action.

The main GPOs including those in Dublin, Cork and Limerick closed as Post Office counter staff took industrial action.

An Post advised customers that “unofficial industrial action by Post Office Counter staff, who are members of the Commmunications Workers Union (CWU), is causing widespread disruption to Post Office services around the country”.

However, many of the sub post office remained open and carried out business as usual with the exception of Sandymount, Dublin 4, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 and Fassaugh Avenue, Dublin 7.

The following post offices were closed as a result of the industrial action:
  • Dublin: GPO, St Andrew St, South Anne St, Rathmines, Phibsboro, Blanchardstown Centre, Blackrock, Dun Laoire, James’s St, Ballsbridge; Tallaght;
  • Cork: GPO, Macroom, Youghal, Cobh
  • Limerick: GPO
  • Co Clare: Shannon Town
  • Monaghan: Castleblayney
  • Mayo: Ballinrobe.
An Post said that customers in receipt of book-based welfare payments may collect their payments at any neighbouring sub post office.

However, the industrial action made it impossible for customers using swipe cards to receive payment of unemployment benefit.
