70 Iraqis die in US attack on 'terrorist' base
In a new phase to the post-conflict situation in Iraq, the US military has launched an assault against what is described as "terrorist" base in the north of the country.
It is believed that as many as 70 Iraqi's have been killed in the two-day operation, and one US soldier has received minor wounds.
The US military has said that mission goal was to eliminate "pro-Saddam forces remaining in Iraq".
The raid, which targeted a camp about 150 kilometres northwest of Baghdad, began on Wednesday with an early morning air strike. Soldiers from the 101st Airborne then moved into area. The mopping up operation is continuing.
Elsewhere, the US Air Force has reported that one of their F-16 fighters crashed southwest of Baghdad yesterday.
The F-16 pilot was flying from a forward-deployed air base in Southwest Asia "supporting operations in Iraq".
The pilot of the single-seat jet ejected safely and was rescued by coalition forces. He is receiving medical treatment. The cause of the crash is being investigated.
And in western Iraq, a US Army Apache helicopter was shot down by hostile fire. Coalition forces recovered the helicopter's two uninjured crewmembers.
The two Army helicopter pilots belong to the 101st Airborne Division.
It has not yet been confirmed whether either aircraft was involved in the ground action.
