Girl dies in freak accident at air show
A five-year-old British girl has been killed after a freak accident at an air show in Germany.
The accident occurred after a sudden hailstorm and high winds hit the British air base in Rheindalen, western Germany, yesterday. The girl became entangled in ropes securing a helium balloon and it was then blown from its moorings
The girl's body was recovered two hours later, near to where the balloon finally came down – about 40 miles away.
Six people were also injured during the hailstorm, one of whom required hospital treatment.
The girl's parents – her father is a soldier serving in the British army – are said to be "devastated".
An investigation into safety procedures is under way.
