Officer Injured While Chasing A Suspect
Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for witnesses after one of its officers was injured while trying to detain a man in Bristol earlier this morning.
PC Chris Hardaway, aged 26, suffered serious head injuries when he fell through the roof of the Bristol 2CV garage in Hampton Road, Cotham.
Chris and a colleague were patrolling when they noticed a man acting suspiciously.
The police helicopter assisted with the search and spotted a man on the roof of the garage.
Chris climbed on to the building but fell through the roof, receiving serious head injuries. He was taken to Frenchay Hospital where he has undergone emergency surgery. His condition is currently described as stable.
Assistant Chief Constable Anthony Bangham said that what Chris did this morning was "brave and courageous".
"This kind of feat is part and parcel of the daily business of our officers.
"We are proud of Christopher, who is typical of the enthusiastic men and women who police in Avon and Somerset, patrolling the area with courage and integrity making people feel safe in their homes.
"Christopher has been seriously injured and is undergoing emergency surgery and our thoughts are with him and his family at this time, as they would be for any other officer injured carrying out actions to protect their local community," said ACC Bangham.
