Crime Figures At Record Low

New figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown a 7% drop in crime in England and Wales, reaching a record low.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales shows that there were 8.5 million incidents in the year to June, compared to 9.1m for the same period the year previous.

The new record low, the lowest since the survey began in 1981, has been recorded despite a 9% rise in sexual offences.

According to the ONS the number of historical sexual offences, which are those that took place more than 20 years ago, has doubled.

It is thought that this increase is due to Jimmy Savile revelations and subsequent inquiry encouraging more people to report historical abuse.
