Govt Introduce Scheme To Extend Hours At GP Surgeries

A new pilot scheme in nine areas of England will see doctors surgeries bidding for funds to open for 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

David Cameron has launched the £50m scheme in an effort to give patients the opportunity to see a GP in the evening or at the weekend, with surgeries more suited to "work and family like".

In Manchester, a similar scheme is already underway, with GPs grouping together to offer extended opening hours. It is understood that it is being done in an effort to reduce "unnecessary" visits to hospital A&E departments.

The new government backed scheme will provide £50m in funding which GP surgeries can apply for. Successful surgeries will then become "pioneers" in the nine UK regions.

The scheme is due to begin next year.
