High Street Shop Closures Slow Slightly

The rate of high street shop closures has slowed slighted, according to a study.

In the first half of the year, some 18 shops closed each day in town centres, down from 20 per day for the same period last year.

Overall, 209 shops closed in the first half of the year, compared with 953 for the same period last year.

The study, compiled by PwC and the Local Data Company, found that photography shops were the most commonly closed shops, while charity and hearing aid shops opened new stores.

Life sentence for killer of pregnant teen
A man has been jailed for life for raping and killing pregnant teenager Amy Williams last year. Phillip Powell, 43, from Telford, pleaded guilty to attacking and killing the 14-year-old on Boxing Day last year, at Stafford Crown Court today.

Half Of Online Shoppers 'Shop Local'
A survey of online shoppers in the UK has found that despite having the world at their fingertips, half still prefer to shop British. The research by consumer group Which? showed that the British public were keen internet shoppers but many are reluctant to use overseas websites in case something goes wrong.
