CPS Consider Charges Against 14 Police Officers Over Murder Investigation

Fourteen serving and former police officers could face charges in connection with the roles in a murder investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

The investigation in question is that into the murder of Kevin Nunes, who was shot dead in Pattingham, Staffordshire, in September 2002 and follows a review of the investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which looked at the officers' dealings with a protected witness and disclosure issues ahead of the 2008 trial.

Five men jailed in 2008 for the murder of Mr Nunes were freed on appeal in March 2012. It was revealed that concerns over the key prosecution witness's credibility were not disclosed to the defense.

It is understood that the IPCC examined over 8,000 documents, taken more than 300 statements and interviewed all officers concerned, at least twice.

The results of the IPCC investigation have been handed over to the CPS, who are now considering if action needs to be taken against the officers.
