British Man Killed In New Zealand
A British man has died in New Zealand after falling 2,000ft on a mountain.
Police in New Zealand confirmed 31-year-old Robert Buckley, who was currently living in Christchurch, died while climbing to a hut on Mount Sefton in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park on Saturday.
According to local media, Mr Buckley's body was recovered by a team of rescuers on Sunday afternoon after attempts on Saturday were unsuccessful.
It is also understood that three climbers with Mr Buckley were rescued after spending the night on the mountain. They were were released after a medical examination.
In a statement, police said the group had hired some climbing equipment early o Saturday and had managed to get within 80 meters of the bivvy. One of the party is thought to have slipped on the ice and has fallen some 700 meters to his death.
Local police inspector Dave Gaskin said: "There was a lot of snow and ice in very steep conditions.
"It appears as if the party were insufficiently equipped and inexperienced for the climb they had undertaken."
Mr Buckley's death comes just one day after 36-year-old Duncan Rait was killed after slipping and falling 200ft from a ridge in the same national park.
Both accidents have been referred to the Coroner.
