Edinburgh Uni Bans 'Blurred Lines' Song
Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA) has banned Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' song from being played in any of its buildings at the institution.
According to The Independent, a report by student website The Tab said a DJ was ordered to fade out the track at a silent disco on Sunday night despite students having the choice to turn off the song by switching to another channel on their headphones.
The ban is said to fall into line with an EUSA policy entitled 'End Rape Culture and Lad Banter on Campus', and to tackle "myths and stereotypes around sexual violence".
Thicke's song, despite reaching number one earlier this year, has been heavily criticised for appearing to refer to non-consensual sex in some of its lyrics.
These include the main chorus lines, "I hate these blurred lines, I know you want it" and "must wanna get nasty".
However, the singer has denied the accusations of lyrics about rape as "ridiculous", adding that he has "always respected women".
EUSA Vice President Kirsty Haigh is quoted as saying: "The decision to ban Blurred Lines from our venues has been taken as it promotes an unhealthy attitude towards sex and consent."
She added that there is a "zero tolerance towards sexual harassment, a policy to end lad culture on campus and a safe space policy - all of which this song violates."
