CPS Reviewing Cases Of Genital Mutilation

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is considering bringing charges in five cases of female genital mutilation (FGM), which was criminalised 28 years ago.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has said that the likelihood of the UK's first prosecution is increasing as a new strategy is helping them track down those responsible.

However, it is understood that very few incidents of FGM are ever reported and of those even fewer victims are prepared to give evidence.

The CPS are reviewing four previous case in which it was decided not to charges and looking at if there is enough evidence in a new case to proceed with charges.
