National Lottery ticket sales fall continues

Figures released today from National Lottery operator Camelot have revealed that there has been a massive fall in the sales of the main Lotto game.

Ticket sales plunged 12% for the draw, but Camelot has pledged to return the lottery to growth with "innovative new draws".

Camelot, playing down the slump, said: “Sales for the last quarter of 2002/3 give the clearest indication yet of the benefits of diversification, with non-Lotto games representing an ever growing proportion of total sales.”

The Uk lottery operator unveiled a strategy that includes the launch of a daily game later in 2003, followed by a pan-European lottery game early in 2004 and the launch of lottery-style games on the internet, interactive television, and mobile phones.

Camelot will also launch the first ever ‘Good Cause’ themed lottery games to raise £750 million as part of a £1.5 billion funding package for the British Olympic bid.

The National Lottery operator has already outlined its concepts for Olympic-themed lottery games, including a 'pocket change' game, an Olympic Mega Draw (similar to the Spanish El Gordo - 'The Big One') a weekly draw-based game and Olympic-themed scratchcards. Subject to legislative changes and regulatory approval, Camelot would be ready to launch the first Olympic-themed lottery games as early as next year.

Launched in 1994, sales of the main ticket draw for the Lottery pulled in £48 million a week. This figure climbed to peak at £100 million a week in 1997 to 1998, but has since dropped to £88 million a week.
