15 Year High In Adoption Figures

A 9.8% rise in adoptions in England and Wales in 2012 has been reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to the ONS, a total of 5,206 children were adopted, up from 4,740 in 2011, representing the largest annual rise in 15 years.

In the report, the ONS said the increase "could be a consequence of the recent drive to improve the adoptions process in England and in Wales".

Other figures reveal that 63% of adopted children were aged between one and four, compared to just 34% in 1998.

The adoption figures related to children adopted by relatives and step-parents as well as adoptions from care.
