World's First Lab Created Burger Eaten In London

The first ever laboratory-grown "meat" hamburger has been cooked and eaten at a press conference in London.

Stem cells taken from a cow were used by scientists in the Netherlands to created strips of muscle, that were then combined to make a burger patty.

The scientists were researching ways to produce sustainable way of meeting the growing demand for meat.

Chef Richard McGown cooked the burger for food critics Hanni Ruetzler and Josh Schonwald.

Remarking on the burger after tasting it, Ms Ruetzler is quoted as saying that while she missed salt and pepper, the flavour was "quite intense" adding that the consistency "was perfect".

Salmonella Outbreak In England And Wales Has Links To Cooked Meat
Investigations show that an outbreak of salmonella seen in England and Wales has links to the consumption of cooked ham bought from small independent butchers' shops. The results of tests carried out by environmental health officers on the product did not show the presence of salmonella although it did reveal other hygiene issues.

'Burger Diet' Increases Child Asthma
Eating three or more burgers a week may boost a child's risk of asthma and wheeze - at least in developed nations - reveals a large international study, published in Thorax today. Conversely, a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, and fish seems to stave off the risk, the research shows.

Possible Hungarian source for Suffolk avian flu
There have been claims that the bird flu, which affected a turkey farm in Suffolk, may have come from Hungary. According to reports, government vets now believe that the deadly H5N1 virus was spread from other poultry and not from wild birds.

More cases found in E. coli outbreak
There have been calls for a public inquiry into the E. coli outbreak in south Wales where the number of cases has reached 115. Four children are being treated for acute kidney problems, which is a known complication of infection with the toxin producing 0157 strain of E. coli.

Body Found In Leicester Square
Police believe a body found near Leicester Square could be Irish teenager Patrick Halpin. The student, from Loughrea in Co Galway, went missing on a college trip to the capital on Wednesday, according to the police. On Thursday, at around 7.50pm, police discovered a body in an area off Leicester Square close to the Zoo Bar and a Burger King outlet.
