Belfast City Councillor Arrested Over Facebook Post
A DUP Councillor in Northern Ireland has been arrested in connection with "grossly offensive communications, intimidation and encouraging criminal acts", the Police Service of Northern Ireland has said.
57-year-old Ruth Patterson, a Belfast city Councillor for the Democratic Unionist Party, responded to a post on Facebook that imagined a "terrorist attack" on an upcoming republican parade, "killing" several people including senior Sinn Féin officials. Posting on the site she said: "We would have done a great service to Northern Ireland and the world."
Later apologising for the post, Patterson said that her comments were, "completely incompatible with the polices of the Democratic Unionist Party and what is expected of me as an elected representative".
The PSNI reported this morning that they had arrested a 57-year-old female in relation to the posts.
The post on which she commented, was discussing an upcoming parade commemorating the deaths of two IRA men who were killed by the bomb they were making in Castlederg, 30 years ago. The parade has the support of Sinn Féin, unionists however have called the march, "grossly insensitive".
The Parades Commission, which rules on contentious parades in Northern Ireland, ruled on Thursday that the march could go ahead, re-routing it away from a war memorial in the centre of the town.

A new government support package worth £300million has been allocated for rural post offices from 2006-2008 it was announced today. The current three year funding initiative which runs until 2006 aims to enable Post Office Ltd to continue to meet the cost of maintaining the non-commercial part of the rural post office network.

Post Office staff are to undertake further strike action, the 13th such action since Easter. Some 4,000 Communication Workers Union (CWU) members at 372 of the UKs larger Crown post officers will hold a half-day strike on 20 November. It is the latest action in a long running dispute over jobs, pay and branch closures.

Olympic Post Boxes To Remain Gold
Post boxes painted gold during the summer to celebrate the gold medals of the British Olympic and Paralympics teams are to remain so on a permanent basis. The Royal Mail made the announcement today that the 110 gold post boxes across the UK will not be re-painted in the traditional red colour.
