Project Guardian Launched To Tackle Sexual Harassment On London Transport
A new initiative has been launched on London's transport network to tackle sexual assault and harassment.
With some 2,000 officers – all officers who patrol underground and overground trains and London's buses – it is the largest scheme of its kind.
The officers have been trained to deal with sexual offences, with up to 180 officers deployed at a time under the Project Guardian scheme.
It is understood that transport bosses began the initiative following recent studies which highlighted safety and security concerns, with one of the biggest fears of commuters being sexual harassment.
A study also showed that few woman report sexual harassment or assault.
London transport bosses asked three woman's campaign groups – the End Violence Against Women coalition, Hollaback and Everyday Sexism – to help draft the initiative's guidelines and train staff.
An awareness campaign will begin online on Tuesday, led by police and the website, Everyday Sexism. People will be encouraged to use twitter to share and report incidents that have happened to them on the transport network that week in real time using the hashtag #ProjGuardian.
