Prison Officers Deny 'Any Wrongdoing' After Woolwich Suspect Loses Teeth

An investigation is underway after one of the Woolwich murder suspects reportedly lost two front teeth in an incident at London's Belmarsh Prison on Wednesday.

The Prison Officers Association denied "any wrongdoing" by guards saying prisoner was subjected to restraint by officers using approved control and restraint techniques.

A POA spokesman added: "Our members strenuously deny any wrongdoing and the POA will be supporting them legally and emotionally during this difficult time.

"The use of restraint is only used where necessary."

'Chaos' Fear Over Birmingham Tunnel Closures

Concerns have been raised over city centre "chaos" as Birmingham's main city centre tunnels will close for six weeks.

The tunnels are closing to allow the first major work in their 40-year history .

The St Chad's and Queensway tunnels, on the A38 between St Chad's Cathedral and The Mailbox, will shut at 22:00 BST.

Steve Brittan, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce's president, has warned it will cause "chaos" in the city centre.

The tunnels, which are due to reopen at 06:00 on 2 September, will also shut for six weeks for more work next year.

'Jubilee' Forest Accidentally Cut Down

A wood created for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee has been accidentally mowed down by a council workman.

The 2,000 saplings planted in December 2012 in Nidd Gorge, near Harrogate, recreated an ancient woodland.

Keith Wilkinson, chairman of the Bilton Conservation Group which planted the trees, said the workman had "turned left instead of right".

Harrogate Borough Council apologised for the error and said it would help with replanting the area.

New Channel Tunnel rail link opened
The Prime Minister has opened the first section of the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link at London's Waterloo Station today. The new section will allow trains to run at up to 186 miles per hour, reducing journey times from London to Paris to nearly two and a half hours.

Eurostar smashes rail speed record
Eurostar, the fast train service linking the UK with France and Belgium, today shattered the speed record for the fastest ever train in the UK – achieving 208mph (334.7km/h) as it ran through Kent on the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The record-breaking run took place during safety testing on CTRL Section 1.

Birmingham City Council Reveal 20-Year City Plan
A new £4 billion transport plan for Birmingham has been revealed by the city's council. The 20-year Birmingham Connected scheme proposes three tram lines for the city, a high-speed bus route, the reopening of rail lines and the construction of two new stations.

Urgent Appeal Issued For Missing Coventry Teenagers
West Midlands Police have issued an urgent appeal for information on the whereabouts of two teenage girls from Coventry. The 15-year-old girls – Nina Kryukova and Denis Murphy – have not been seen since Monday, when they failed to arrive at Blue Coat Church of England School.

Birmingham City Centre Tunnels To Close For Six Weeks
Following a series of night time closures, tunnels through Birmingham city centre are to be closed full time, until 06 September. Work is being carried out in the tunnels at St Chad's and Queensway to install new ventilation systems, along with new CCTV and communications equipment.
