Concerns Raised That Loyalists Could Mount Weekly Protest

The Police Service of Northern Ireland are preparing themselves for more trouble in north Belfast following a Parades Commission ruling which denied the Orange Order permission to march a contentious route in the city.

On July 12, the Orange Order had been allowed to leave on their parade via Ardoyne, which separates loyalist and nationalist communities. However, the Parades Commission had ruled that they could not return by the same route, which has been the scene of trouble in recent years.

There has been sustained rioting in the city since Friday, despite the Order calling an end to its official protest.

On Thursday, the Parades Commission refused a new application from the Orange Order to march along the same road.

According to The Guardian, loyalist sources have said that the north Belfast site is likely to become a weekly ongoing protest.

It is understood that bandsmen and supporters will still meet on Saturday and march to the site, where they will not be allowed to proceed by the PSNI.

Some 600 police officers from around the UK remain in NI after being assigned to support the PSNI during the marching season.
