NHS Faces Growing Funding Gap

The NHS could be facing a funding gap of some £30bn by 2020-21 if urgent action isn't taken over reorganising hospital and GP care.

In a report by NHS England, Sir David Nicholson has called for services to be concentrated in fewer hospitals.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that services needed to be organised in a way that best suited patients.

He used stroke services as an example. He said the previous 31 London hospitals that offered stroke care some of the worst outcomes for patients, however, with services now concentrated in eight hospitals, outcomes are some of the best in Europe.
