Expenses Watchdog Backs MP Pay Rise
The Commons expenses watchdog has backed a plan to give MPs a £6,000 pay rise – bringing their yearly salary to £74,000.
However, while recommending the pay rise, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) has also called for cuts to perks, including meal allowances, taxis and pension schemes.
MPs used to set their own pay level, but following a 2009 expenses scandal the decision over pay was given to IPSA.
The proposed pay rise will go to consultation before being finalised later this year.
Some MPs have cautioned that such a pay rise could damage Parliament's reputation as it is out-of-step with pay elsewhere.
