Young Offender Institute Condemned As 'Unacceptably Violent'

Prison inspectors have condemned a young offenders institute as "unacceptably violent", with baton use by staff "unprecedentedly high".

An HM Inspectorate of Prisons report an avergae of two fights or assaults a day at Feltham Prison and Young Offender Institution, in west London.

While the report did offer praise to "excellent work in some cases" it added that "staff were unable to prevent a high number of very concerning incidents that carried a significant risk of serious injury."

Feltham is divided into two wings, A houses children and young people, mostly aged 16 or 17, and B, which holds young adult men aged 18 to 21.

The report also criticises the institutes prolonged use of isolation within Feltham A, and excessive use of batons in Feltham B.

Prison Service accused of 'racial discrimination'
The Prison Service has been accused of racial discrimination, according to the findings of a Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) investigation published today. The CRE probe uncovered "evidence leading to the finding of unlawful racial discrimination" and also catalogues 14 areas of failure uncovered by the investigation.

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims
Fourteen prison officers have been suspended from HMP Pentonville following allegations of corruption. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed that the prison officers had been suspended over allegations which concerned trafficking and "inappropriate relations" with prisoners.

Racist murder 'was preventable'
The murder of an Asian prisoner by a racist cellmate could have been prevented, a report has suggested. The report, by High Court judge Mr Justice Keith, named 19 individuals in the prison service, including the then governor, for failings which led to the death of 19-year-old Zahid Mubarek.

Prisons face overcrowding crisis
Prisons in England and Wales are under "enormous pressure" and are facing a "looming overcrowding crisis", according to a charity report. The Prison Reform Trust reported that prison numbers have crept up again since Christmas rising to over 77,000 again.

Northern Ireland Prison Service Facing Reform
As many as 500 prison officers could be made redundant as part of a major, fundamental reform of the prison service in Northern Ireland. There is a severance package being proposed as one of the recommendations in an interim report published by a review team.
