Broadcasters Investigated Over Woolwich Footage

Some 700 complaints about the broadcasting of graphic footage of the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich, has lead to media regulator Ofcom launching an investigation into the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and others.

The regulator will investigate whether the broadcast of graphic mobile phone footage of the Woolwich attack on May 22 before the 9pm watershed, breached the UK broadcasting code.

Some of the footage, shown repeatedly across many networks showed one of the alleged attacks with hands covered in blood while holding a bloodied meat cleaver and knife.

It is understood that around half of the complaints focused on the ITN produced ITV News broadcast, which was the first to show the footage on its 18:30 news bulletin.
