Essex Police To Establish 'Dare To Share' Policy
Heavily criticised Essex police will reveal details of a violent partners past, in an effort to tackle domestic violence.
According to the Guardian the incoming chief constable of Essex Police wants to establish a 'dare to share' policy, within which people can ask for information relating a new or existing partners violent past.
The force has been heavily criticised for its failures in dealing with domestic violence. It is understood that nine people died in domestic violence homicides in four years, despite contact with police.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission identified failings within the force in relation to how it dealt with domestic violence. It is reported that Essex police receive up to 80 calls a day about the crime.
An inquiry by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, resulted to them making a number of recommedations, which include:
• To ensure all staff understand how dealing effectively with domestic abuse can prevent homicides.
• Target repeat perpetrators with the help of the Crown Prosecution Service by pursuing "victimless prosecutions – evidence-based cases where the alleged victim is unwilling to co-operate.
• Intensify its work with domestic violence agencies.
• Improve the way it prioritises domestic violence cases.
Incoming chief constable Steve Kavanagh welcomed the report, adding that much had already improved with the force.
