Prince Philip Send 92nd Birthday In Hospital
The Duke of Edinburgh has spent his 92nd birthday in hospital recovering from surgery.
To mark the occasion guns were fired in Edinburgh Castle and the Tower of London alongside salutes in London's Green Park and Hillsborough Castle in County Down, Northern Ireland.
Following "exploratory operation following abdominal investigations", Prince Philip is said to be “progressing satisfactorily".
Pupils To Visit WWI Battlefields
To mark the centenary of World War I, two pupils and a teacher from all state schools in England will visit battlefields in France and Belgium.
Part of a £5.3m government-funded scheme, the pupils and teachers will be asked to research local people who fought in the war.
There will also be a candle-lit vigil at Westminster Abbey on 04 August 2014, ending at 23:00, exactly 100 years since war was declared.
Author Iain Banks Dies Aged 59
Author Iain Banks has died aged 59.
Banks, who wrote the Wasp Factory, the Crow Road and Complicity amongst many other, announced two months that he had terminal cancer.
A quote from his wife, Adele, on the Banksophilia website, set up to provide updates on the author, read: "Iain died in the early hours this morning. His death was calm and without pain."

Police Recover World War One And Two Munitions In Oxfordshire
Police raids in Oxfordshire have uncovered a number of World War One and Two munitions, thought to have been stolen from heritage and protected sites. Police say the discovery was made at a house in Buckingham Crescent in Bicester. A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft from heritage and protected sites.

Essex County Council Questioned Over Swastikas
A Freedom of Information request has been made to Essex County Council over swastikas carved into Chelmsford's County Hall. It is understood that a member of public has asked the council to explain the use of the symbol on the building, which was built between 1928 and 1939, shortly before World War Two.
