Childcare Shakeup Abandoned
Propose plans to allow childminders and nurseries in England and Wales to look after more children are to be dropped, the BBC have reported.
According to the broadcaster, Nick Clegg contacted the childcare sector on Wednesday to say the plans were “dead in the water”.
The government had claimed the proposed changes would increase the number of childcare places while also cutting costs, but opponents of the moves said that the quality of care would suffer.
"After lengthy discussions both inside of government and outside with stakeholders, the deputy prime minister has today confirmed that the changes to ratios for pre-school children that were consulted on earlier in the year will not go ahead," a statement from the deputy prime ministers office read.
