Englands A&E's Miss Waiting Time Targets
In the first three months of 2013 some 313,000 A&E patients waited more than 4 hours to be seen, as the NHS miss its waiting time target.
The figure rose some 39% for the same period in 2012, according to the King’s Fund, who analysed official statistics.
The figures represent 5.9% of NHS patients – 0.9% beyond the allowed leeway of 5% – and are the worst results for nine years, according to the BBC.
The news follows warnings issued last month by doctors and managers who said the service was headed for crisis as it struggled to cope with rising demand.
