Earthquake Hits North Wales

An earthquake measuring 3.8 in magnitude has hit the north of Wales.

The tremor was felt in the early hours of Wednesday morning and centres on the Llyn peninsula in Gwynedd.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the epicentre was between the towns of Aberdaron and Nefyn.

At 4.16am the tremors were first felt, with the BGS receiving more than 100 reports from people experiencing "intense shaking".

A majority of the reports were within a 100km radius of the epicentre, but there are no reports of damage or injury. The tremors were felt by people living as far away as Southport and Dublin.

The BGS said: "This was a larger than average earthquake, we get around one a year of this size.

"People have reported hearing an initial loud banging, followed by rumbling, and intense shaking."

In February this year, Caernarfon, also in north Wales, was hit by a small earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale.
