Soldier Killed In Woolwich 'Machete' Attack
A serving British soldier has been killed in a knife attack in Woolwich, south-east London.
Two men attacked the soldier in Artillery Place, as he returned to Woolwich Barracks, around 14:20 on Wednesday afternoon.
Witness descriptions suggest the men ran into the as-yet-unnamed victim with their car before getting out and attacking him with knives and meat cleavers – witnesses claiming the men “hacked” at the victim.
They then dragged him into middle of the road and left him there.
Mobile phone footage shown by ITV shows two men holding bloodied knives and a cleaver. The men appear to have made a number of political statements while asking members of the public to take their picture and film them.
It has since been confirmed that armed police arrived some 14 minutes after the attack, at which point the two suspects are said to have charged at their car.
Armed police shot both men before securing their arrest.
Both suspects when moved to separate hospitals a short time later, and remain there under armed guard.
The latest developments, reported by the BBC, say that the two suspects, one since named as 28-year-old Michael Adebolajo, were known to security services.
According to the BBC both suspects featured in "several investigations" but “had not been deemed to be planning an attack”.
The broadcaster has also reported that a flat on a Greenwich housing estate, thought to be that of one of the suspects, and an address in Saxilby, Lincolnshire, are being searched by police.
1,200 additional police officers are on duty across London following the attacks.
The investigation continues.
