Net Migration Falls In Year To Sept 2012

New figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown that net migration fell by 10,000 in the year to September 2012, leaving the total at 153,000.

It is thought that the drop can be attributed to a decrease in the number of overseas students coming to Britain and a decline in the numbers using the ‘family reunion’ route.

Net migration figures are worked by estimated comparison between those moving to Britain for more than 12 months and those leaving to live abroad for more than 12 months.

The current figure is down by 10,000 on the previous figure of 163,000 and down by some 89,000, on the previous year's figure of 242,000 recorded in the 12 months to September 2011.
