School uniform improves classroom discipline

Most parents believe that school uniform improves discipline, raises standards and reduces peer pressure and bullying, according to a new survey.

The survey, examining public attitudes towards school uniforms in England, found that:

  • 83% of parents were in favour of pupils wearing school uniform;
  • 77% of all respondents were in favour of pupils wearing school uniform;
  • 68% thought that school uniform could help improve school discipline;
  • 66% felt that school uniform could improve school standards.

Importantly many parents consider a school uniform to equalise standards of dress among pupils, limiting peer pressure to have the best clothes and consequently reducing bullying. Uniform also instilled a sense of identification, community and pride in schools among pupils.

Welcoming the results of the survey Education Secretary Charles Clarke said uniforms can also help to tackle bad behaviour in the classroom.

"Parents have a crucial role to play in supporting their children in schools and getting the best possible start in life, and I welcome their support for school uniforms which clearly have a marked effect on improving behaviour and standards in our schools."

The Government has published guidance encouraging school heads and governors to make sure that uniforms are affordable to all parents and avoid stigmatising or excluding pupils from less well-off backgrounds for failing to comply with established school policy.
