Labour Win South Shields By-Election
Labour has won the South Shields parliamentary by-election.
While it still retains a seat it has held since 1935, the party did see its majority reduced in the poll.
The UK Independence Party (UKIP) finished second in Thursday's election with 24% share of the vote, while the Conservatives fell to third. Their coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, finished seventh.
The South Shields contest was fuelled after former Labour Foreign Secretary David Miliband resigned as an MP.
Labour candidate Emma Lewell-Buck said she was "absolutely ecstatic" about her by-election victory.
On announcement of the result, she said: "Mr Cameron, when working families needed a government on their side, you made them pay for a tax cut for millionaires.
"When our young people needed jobs, you gave them a shrinking economy, and when the most vulnerable people in our society were really struggling you gave them the bedroom tax."
"I will help get people back to work, champion our wonderful town and never give the Tory government one moment's peace."
She topped the poll with 6,505 votes, followed by UKIP candidate Richard Elvin with 5,988 votes.
The Conservatives came third with 2,857 votes, while the Lib Dems received fewer votes than the BNP and two independent candidates.
County council elections have also been held in England, with the UKIP making significant gains, while the Conservatives have lost their majorities in Gloucestershire and Lincolnshire.
