Man Given Life Sentence For Murdering Parents
A 46-year-old man has been jailed for life after being convicted of killing his parents.
Following a five-week trial, Mr Seddon was convicted of murdering his father Robert (68) and his mother Patricia (65) as well as their attempted murders four months previously.
The couple had made Seddon sole beneficiary of their estate in their will, and had given already given him £40,000 in cash and bought him his house in Seaham, Co Durham.
Seddon, who was said to have an "insatiable thirst for cash" had previously tried to kill the elderly couple by driving into the Bridgewater Canal in South Manchester on 20 March last year.
It is understood his parents were strapped in the back seats of the car in what was a faked road accident. When bystanders went to the aid of the couple in the submerged hired BMW, Seddon was forced to abort his murder plan and began to boast of his rescue attempts. His nephew, Daniel, was also in the car but managed to get to safety.
On July 4, Seddon shot his parents dead with a sawn-off shotgun at their Greater Manchester home. He had three shotgun cartridges with him and police believe he also intended to kill his disabled nephew. Mr Seddon's nephew was in respite care the day of the incident.
Speaking to Seddon, Mr Justice Hamblen stated: "In effect you have executed your own parents.
"You have done so by the barbaric act of shooting them at point- blank range with a sawn-off shotgun.
"One can only imagine the horror of your parents' last moments in this life, when they realised what a monster their son, whom they loved, had become. Mercifully their deaths were swift."
He added that, in Seddon's case, life should mean life and he ordered that he serve a whole-life term. This means he will never be released.
As he was sentenced, Seddon protested his innocence, shouting from the dock: "No, not at all, they were not murdered by me at all. I'm an innocent man."
A jury had convicted Seddon of all four counts on Wednesday after a five week trial at Manchester Crown Court.
