Algerian nationals required to hold travel visa
The Home Office has announced today that Algerian nationals travelling through the UK will be required to have a travel visa from midnight tomorrow.
Algerians, who already need a visa to visit the UK, will now also need to obtain a visa to pass through the UK on their way to a third country.
Announcing the change Home Office Minister Beverley Hughes said: "This new visa requirement for Algerian nationals follows strong evidence that some Algerians have abused the right to travel through the UK without a visa - never intending to travel onwards but either remaining here illegally or making unfounded asylum claims.”
The Minister said that of the 1,120 decisions made about Algerian claims for asylum in 2002, only 50 people were judged to be in need of protection.
"These improved controls will support the radical reforms we are implementing to tackle abuse of the system and halve the number of asylum seekers by September 2003,” she said.
The statistics on those seeking asylum for the final quarter of 2002 show a drop from almost 9,000 claims in October to 6,670 in December.
The Minister noted that there had been “further substantial reductions” in the number since then.
