Survey Finds Drs Prescribe Placebo

A survey has found that most family GPs have prescribed a placebo to at least one of their patients.

In the PLOS One study, 97% of 783 GPs admitted that they had recommended a sugar pill or a treatment with no established efficacy for the ailment their patient came in with.

The study authors say this may not be a bad thing - doctors are doing it to help, not to deceive patients.

The Royal College of GPs says there is a place for placebos in medicine.

Former BBC DG Set To Be New FA Chairman

Greg Dyke, the former director general of the BBC, is to be announced as the new chairman of the Football Association, pending approval by the FA council.

Dyke must also stand down as Brentford chairman to take over the role from David Bernstein in July, bat has been quoted as saying: "I am very excited to take on this role with the FA. Football has always been a big part of my life".

Date Announced For Scottish Referendum

The Scottish independence referendum will be held on 18 September 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond has said.

He revealed the date as draft legislation on holding the vote was brought before the Scottish Parliament.

Voters will be asked the yes/no question, "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

FA Charge Cisse And Evans Over Spitting Incident
The Football Association (FA) has charged Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse and Manchester United's Jonny Evans over a spitting incident during a match on Wednesday 4 March. The charges are in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule in that in or around the 38th minute of the game the two players spat at each other.

Referee Charged With Hacking FA Computer
A football referee has been charged with hacking a computer at the Football Association. 30-year-old Dean Mohared, of Woodley, Stockport is charged with perverting the course of justice and unauthorised access to computer data. Two other men have also been charged in connection with the investigation.

FA Vote To Introduce Goal-Line Technology
Goal-line technology will be introduced to UK football from the 2013-14 season, following a vote by the Premier League. The contract to provide the system has been awarded to British company Hawk-Eye.

FAW 'Devastated' At Death Of Speed
The Football Association of Wales has spoken of its devastation at the news of Gary Speeds apparent suicide on Saturday. The association said it was a "huge loss" that this tragedy should have overtaken someone so young and talented, not only for his family and friends but the "nation as a whole".

FA Requests Delay
FIFA have been approached by the Football Association and the Scottish Football Association to postpone its presidential election. Following Mohamed Bin Hammam's withdrawal, current president Sepp Blatter is the sole candidate in the running for the 1 June election.
