TB Related Cattle Slaughter Up 10%

Since 2011 there has been 10% increase in the number of cattle slaughtered in Britian because of bovine tuberculosis (TB), new figures reveal.

Statistics released by Defra suggest that testing in Britain increased by about 6% between 2011 and 2012.

The issue of if and how to cull badgers, which spread the disease, has been fraught by disagreements on practicality and animal rights.

However, Defra said the disease had "potential to become a national crisis".

M20 Closed By Bad Weather On Continent

Part of the M20 motorway in Kent has been closed as routes to continental Europe are badly affected by weather.

Operation Stack - which sees lorries park up on the motorway while waiting to get into the Port of Dover - has been put in place.

Snow and ice in France and Belgium has caused delays to freight and passenger services through the Channel Tunnel.

Ferry services are running a normal service after DFDS earlier reported delays of up to three hours.

Former Yes Guitarist Peter Banks Dies Aged 65

Peter Banks, original guitarist with the band Yes, has died aged 65.

He played on two albums with the group before pursuing his own band Flash, and a solo career, which included a guest spot on Lionel Richie's hit Hello.

Banks died on 8 March from heart failure and was found at his home after he had not turned up to a recording studio.

£5m Allocated To Tackle Children's Communication Problems
A £5million package of measures is being rolled out to help improve services for children and young people with communication problems. A new Communication Champion is also being recruited to raise the profile of these issues, Children's Secretary, Ed Balls and Care Services Minister Phil Hope announced today.

Marks & Spencer poised to axe 1,000 jobs
Under restructuring plans announced on Friday, Marks & Spencer is to axe around 1,000 jobs following a review of head office operations and the financial services division. The company said the decision formed a "major part of Marks & Spencer's ongoing plan to accelerate business transformation".

Fresh Bluetongue Cases Reported
Two more cases of animal disease bluetongue - which mostly affects sheep (pictured) - have been detected in imported rams, the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has said. It is understood the rams were imported from the same premises in a blue-tongue restricted zone in France.

Restrictions Follow Bird Flu Outbreak
A wild life reserve is working closely with the Government's agricultural department to try to contain an outbreak the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu. Health experts are also to inspect a number of poultry farms after three wild swans tested positive for the deadly bird disease.

Fourth Case Of Bluetongue Confirmed
A fourth case of Bluetongue disease was confirmed today by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). An animal tested positive for the disease on a third premises in England. The animal will be culled.
