Bypassing Roadworks Adds 240 Miles Per Year
Motorists are adding almost 240 miles a year in their efforts to bypass roadworks.
A Freedom of Information Act has revealed that Britain's motorists are enduring 1,434 miles of roadworks.
The 19,000 sets of roadworks add up to an average of 43 minutes a week delay to journeys.
Councils with a high number of works in their area were Essex County Council with 6,000, East Riding of Yorkshire Council with 2,066 and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council in Yorkshire with 1,815.
Councils with some of the longest stretches of roadworks in terms of miles were Cumbria County Council (217 miles) and Oxford City Council (207 miles).

A loyalist campaign has appeared at Laganside court in Belfast dressed as Abu Hamza. Willie Frazer is facing charges in connection with demonstrations in January over Belfast City Councils decision to only fly the union flag on designated days, bring it into line with the rest of the UK.

Rescue crews have called off their search for a British sailor who fell from a yacht in the Pacific Ocean. Luke Stimson, 38, fell into the water on Saturday night almost 500 miles from land.

Japanese fishing vessel in distress 800 miles off NI
The UK Coastguard are currently involved in assisting a Japanese fishing vessel in distress about 800 miles off the coast of Northern Ireland. At about 11:40pm last night Falmouth Coastguard picked up a distress call from Kinshoumaru No 18' with a crew of 23. The fishing vessel gave a position of 800 miles west of the coast of Northern Ireland.
