Longhurst murder suspect re-arrested

The man who was arrested and bailed last week over the murder of music teacher Jane Longhurst has been re-arrested.

The 35-year-old man, from Hove, was arrested at his home last night and taken to Brighton police station. He was originally arrested last Thursday night but was released on police bail on Friday evening.

It has been nine days since Miss Longhurst's body was discovered at Wiggonholt Common, near Pulborough, Sussex. Jane Longhurst, a 31-year-old music teacher, went missing on March 14. Her body was found at the popular beauty spot on April 19 after an attempt had been made to set fire to it. Police believed that Miss Longhurst was strangled quite some time before the killer made the botched attempt to destroy her body.

Police have launched a number of appeals and last Saturday over 700 motorists were spoken to by police near to where Jane’s burning body was left by her killer.

The man leading the investigation, DCI Steve Dennis, said: “Every time we make an appeal someone else calls in with information. It doesn’t matter if it’s something small, anything that may help lead us to Jane’s killer will be welcomed by police.”

Officers are still searching for various items of Jane’s clothing and property, including a denim jacket, red suede trainers, her blue Nokia 3310 mobile phone and her set of keys containing two Yale keys and a bike lock on a ring.
