Mobile Company Develop Technology To Analyse Voice Calls
Technology that listens in on personal calls to draw up a psychological profile of a speaker according to their tone of voice is being developed by owner of the O2 mobile phone network, Telefónica.
Described as the mobile equivalent of Facebook’s social graph and Google’s search graph, which map user behaviour to determine their preferences and interests, engineers and and psychologists in Telefónica's Barcelona research facility have built a linguistic analysis engine to mine and interpret data from phone conversations.
Telefónica revealed the technology to a select audience at the Mobile World Congress trade fair this week.
The technology has been trialled using the voices of internet volunteers and tt is claimed the engine can construct personality traits with 80% accuracy.
The company say customers would be able to use the information to learn about themselves.
However analysts briefed on the project have said it could be of interest to advertisers, although Telefónica insisted it had no such plans.
