January Sees Further Fall In Whooping Cough Cases

Health Protection Agency figures for England and Wales show that whooping cough cases have slowed over the last two months.

It follows the largest outbreak for 20 years.

In December 832 cases were recorded, almost half the total from October.

During the outbreak 14 babies died, the last death coming in December.

However, experts are warning that the drop in cases could be a seasonal dip and that the outbreak may not be over.

"The December figures show another welcome decrease in the overall number of whooping cough cases since the peak in October,” Dr. Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at the HPA, said.

"However, it is very important to note that we usually see a reduction in cases of whooping cough at this time of year so this decrease is in line with normal seasonal patterns."
