Hardline Muslim cleric appeals deportation decision

Lawyers representing the fundamentalist Muslim cleric Sheikh Abu Hamza have lodged an appeal over the decision by the Home Secretary to deport him.

David Blunkett invoked new measures against Hamza in which citizens with dual nationality can be stripped of their British passport and deported if they act in a way that is "seriously prejudicial" to the UK's vital interests.

A Court of Appeal hearing is expected to take place in the next few months.

Abu Hamza, who lost his arm and an eye whilst fighting for the Taliban against the Soviet Army in Afghanistan, has caused outrage for his controversial teachings. Based at the Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, Hamza has made numerous speeches against the US and Israel. He went so far as to describe the deaths of the astronauts on board the Columbia space shuttle as "punishment from Allah".

Hamza is wanted in connection with the bombing of the USS Cole off the coast of Yemen three years ago in which 17 American sailors died. Should his appeal fail, Hamza could be stripped of his citizenship and returned to his native Egypt – where he could face extradiction to the US or Yemen over the incident.

Hamza's lawyers have argued that his human rights could be violated if he were deported and extradicted to Yemen – which has a poor human rights records.
