Philanthropist billionaire dies in London
Billionaire philanthropist Sir John Paul Getty II has died in a London Hospital at the age of 70.
Sir Paul was being treated at the London Clinic for a recurrent chest infection. Dr John Gladstone issued a statement on behalf of the Getty family, which read: "Sadly Sir Paul passed away at 10.40am today.
"His family would like to extend their thanks to all those who have expressed their sympathy, which is greatly appreciated."
Sir Paul was famous for his reclusive lifestyle and, more notably, his estimated £120 million donations to charity.
He renounced his US citizenship in 1998 to take up a British passport. As he had received an honorary knighthood in 1986, Sir Paul was able to use the honorific once he became a British subject.
Among gifts to many deserving causes, Sir Paul gave £50 million to the National Gallery, £20 million to the British Film Institute and a substantial donation to the building of the Mound Stand at Lord's cricket ground.
